Flood Damage Technicians Explain Hardwood Floor Drying Equipment

Hardwood floors are designed to repel moisture that gets on your floors in Nashua. However, wood flooring can still get damaged if enough water saturates the materials for long enough. If a severe thunderstorm takes place, excessive rains could cause flooding. If water gets deep on the outside, then it is possible that it will leak into your home affecting your flooring.

Enough water can ruin the wood’s structural integrity, or mold can develop. When restoring flood damage in Nashua, our SERVPRO technicians use specialized methods to prevent permanent damage to hardwood flooring. If the wood stays wet for long enough, it can start to warp, bow, and cup.

In some cases, drying procedures prevent cupping in wood floors from remaining after moisture is gone. Other times the cupping stays after the floor is drying, requiring our SERVPRO crew to sand down the flooring eliminating the cupping. If sanding takes place, we make sure the floor is completely dry so that the warping does not return after sanding.

One way to rapidly dry out hardwood floors is to use drying mats. The mats consist of a flat rubber mat with holes on the bottom, with a hose attached to an air moving system. Air gets pumped into the mats that concentrate and spread out the air across the wood. Drying mats work well when drying out flooring that is wide and when the affected areas are only in certain sections of the floor.

If the entire hardwood floor got wet after the storm, a flat lay drying system could be used on the floor. Flat lay systems consist of a plastic sheet attached to a hose and an air moving system. The air movers pump air underneath the plastic helping concentrate it on the flooring material. Flat lay systems work well with flooring material that is not as wide and requires more concentrated drying over a larger area than mats can cover.

Once hardwood floors get wet, drying is vital to prevent mold problems and permanent cupping and warping. Before your floor needs re-sanding due to water damage, call SERVPRO of Nashua at (603) 889-2311 24/7.
